This type of premature failure is usually birthed by ‘if-onlies,’ fear-ridden, persuasive obstacles that sit right at the starting line of any journey worthwhile. “If only I had or if only I were or if only I could.”
We can be too quick to invalidate our right to start, our ability to start, by delusions of unpreparedness. When we are so preoccupied with the big picture we forget that every masterpiece started with one single, first brushstroke.
When we focus too much on the big picture, we miscalculate our immediate necessities and deem ourselves unfit to even approach the canvas. And thus empower and settle upon those “if only” excuses of why we must wait until the proper conditions present themselves when really, we should be gradually building those perfect conditions ourselves.
“If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.” – Lemony Snicket
Once you begin, even if only a small assertion towards your goal, the universe begins to move on your behalf. Opportunities arise, yet obstacles do as well. Doubts will encircle your ambitions but confidence will surmount with every step, choking your fear with faith.
And you grow and you move forward and then you look up and you are closer to your goal than you ever have been before.
Even though circumstances may not be perfect for your big picture, there is always something you can do now. And those things, no matter how small, are the base ingredients you need in order to conquer the “if-onlies.”
The “If only I had’s” are easily transformed into “I have’s” and the “If only I were’s” are easily transformed into “I am’s” and the “If only I could’s” are easily transformed into “I can’s,” and before you know you are exactly who you need to be equipped with exactly what you need to achieve that vision. And all of this begins simply with one determined decision to just begin.
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are” – Theodore Roosevelt
