Dolce & Gabbana displayed fashion’s softer side with a heartwarming collection celebrating motherhood. The two designers created a beautiful collection that paid homage to the heart of the family, not simply in design but in execution. Transforming the runway into a parade of family, models were accompanied by chic infants, toddlers and baby bumps.
Luxe dresses were thematically adorned with precious scribbles of “I love you’s” and embroidered with whimsical drawings by children. The juvenile masterpieces printed upon opulent dresses were certainly a welcome upgrade from the usual refrigerator exhibitions we reserve for childish works of art. And roses were ubiquitous within this collection, courtesy of Gabbana’s favorite memories of his mother, who wore rose scented red lipstick throughout his childhood.
Even if you personally are not a mother, there is a universal message here that can be appreciated by all. This motif narrated sentiments of love and affection within an art form that is thought too often to be devoid of those sensitivities. To invite family onto the runway, a place that has historically been the center of controversy for its propensity towards exclusion of anyone divergent of a stringent look, was a beautiful step in the right direction.
